SSAE 16 superseded SAS 70 on June 15, 2011 as the audit standard for service organization auditors. SSAE 16 was adopted by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) in an effort to establish a more uniform reporting standard.
“Service Organization Controls” (SOC) refer to three types of engagements or reports typically given to a company’s – a.k.a. “user entity’s” – internal auditors and/or regulators. The SOC 1 is a report on controls at a service organization relevant to user entities’ internal control over financial reporting; prepared in accordance the SSAE 16 Type 2 and is considered by many as the “Gold Standard” for its reporting depth and detail.
