Financial Statement Services, Inc., (FSSI), recently completed energy conservation measures expected to save nearly $72,000 a year at their 168,000 square-foot corporate headquarters.
FSSI anticipates that the energy conservation measures, completed in 2011, will have less than a one-year payback. The upgrades also reflect a strong corporate commitment to sustainability by FSSI, a full-service print and mail leader specializing in the design, production and delivery of high-impact statements, letters, notices and other time-critical customer communications.
Additional savings include a one-time rebate from Southern California Edison, one of the nation’s largest utilities, for nearly $53,000. Improvements were completed to increase energy and operational efficiency in a competitive industry, reduce operating costs and maximize system reliability to maintain customer confidence. They also improved employee comfort and productivity.
FSSI also is participating in a pilot test of a comprehensive intelligent building services program to ensure that infrastructure systems run at optimum performance and reliability.
In honor of the company’s commitment to energy and sustainability, Dave Regnery, President of Trane in North America recently presented FSSI with an “Energy Efficiency Leader Award.”
“While we are pleased that these improvements save money and increase efficiency, it’s most significant that they enhance our ability to confidently meet client service-level agreements while reflecting our corporate commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Jon Dietz.
The improvements represent a major step in transforming the FSSI headquarters facility into a high-performance building that reflects the organization’s business mission. High-performance buildings take a whole building approach to performance while creating spaces that are reliable, safe, healthy, comfortable and efficient.
High-performance buildings meet specific standards for energy and water consumption, system reliability and uptime, environmental compliance and occupant comfort. All standards are set to deliver established outcomes that help building owners and occupants achieve their business missions.
Energy Conservation Measures
Upgrades included replacing lighting throughout the building with high-efficiency fixtures. This significantly reduced energy consumption, while improving the working environment for FSSI employees and enhancing their productivity. In one production area, for example, overall lighting was increased 38 percent, while energy demand fell 40 percent.
The company began participating in California’s automatic demand response program, which includes resetting production room set points, reducing fan speeds and automatically unloading chilled water systems to reduce energy use. The demand program helps California maintain a reliable electricity supply while reducing the possibility of rotating power outages and the need to build new power plants.
FSSI also implemented high-occupancy sensors in its warehouse that are activated only when forklifts are operating on a particular hallway. Other upgrades included enhancing control optimization on an existing high-efficiency chilled water system to increase energy and operational efficiency.
Intelligent Building Services
The upgrades at FSSI include an evaluation of the potential benefits of intelligent building services. Using advanced technology and analytics, Trane Intelligent Services will continuously collect, interpret and act upon data compiled from building systems and other sources. If operating anomalies are detected, Trane automatically responds or recommends steps the company can take to keep the building operating efficiently and within the predetermined performance parameters.
